A lot of OpenCart users run successful stores with the 'out of the box' default template/theme that comes with OpenCart and that’s perfectly fine if they envisage the majority of their customers visiting their store on a PC rather than a mobile device. The default template will display on mobile devices but it's not a mobile responsive template and for users of smaller devices such as iPhone's, the experience will leave them having to side-scroll and zoom in to read texts and links. Too see exactly what I mean you could go to viewlike.us and enter your OpenCart stores URL and look at it as it will display in various devices (works for any website).
As mobile device usage increases and is set to overtake desktop device usages, the need arises for a responsive template/theme not only for your OpenCart store but for any website you may have. An added bonus of selecting a responsive template or theme is you can get one that's tailored to your business such as the service offered by Template Monster whereby you can select your theme by category and purchase one that best suits the product that you are selling. You can add several themes to OpenCart and switch between them very easily e.g. Christmas, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day etc.
Why would you buy a template/theme when there are many available for free? Chances are that the free ones are being used by countless people and if you want your store to stand out and not look the same as a lot of other stores that sells similar products, I would recommend buying a template/theme as the likely hood of many store owners having the same one as you is reduced dramatically. Double check to make sure that what you are purchasing is mobile responsive. Other great places to get templates/themes from is iSense, Theme Forest, Boss Themes and Xtendify.
